Confidentiality

Babies and parents have a right to confidentiality, and to respect this, we do not give information about a baby's treatment or care to anybody except parents (unless parents have specifically consented for information to be shared with them).

For reasons of confidentiality, parents are asked to leave the nurseries when babies other than their own are being discussed on the ward round. We also ask that parents and other friends / family stay in the area of the baby they have come to visit, rather than walking around and looking at other babies.

Information about babies and their care is recorded in separate medical notes and nursing notes. Parents have a right to read these records (if they have legal parental responsibility), however it might be useful to go over these with a member of staff so that information contained in these notes can be better explained.
